What is Cervical Pain?

Cervical pain can occur due to a condition called cervical spondylosis. It is a condition related to a specific age that affects the joint disks present in the cervical spine of a person, in their neck. Cervical pain is commonly known as neck arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Due to the wear and tear of the cartilage and other bones present in the neck, some may experience cervical pain. Some have mild pain, while other can experience severe, chronic pain and stiffness.

Causes of Cervical Pain

Sometimes, people have cervical pain because there is an overgrowth of bones. Though these over growth of bones try to strengthen the spine, they can press on the delicate areas of the spine and cause pain in the spinal cord and the nerves. Some causes are as follows.

  • Dehydrated Spinal Discs: The bones in the spinal cord have thick gel-like materials that can absorb the shock from twisting, lifting, etc. With age, these may dry out and cause pain.
  • Herniated Discs: If the discs form cracks, the gel can leak and can cause pain that travels down to the arms.
  • Ligament Stiffness: The spinal cords can become stiff and rigid over time. It makes one feel tight around the neck.
  • Posture: Bad posture and sedentary lifestyle may lead to cervical pain.

Symptoms of Cervical Pain

The symptoms are varied in different people. Most have mild symptoms and a few have severe symptoms that can develop over a period or occur suddenly. The most common symptom is feeling pain around the shoulder blade and it may extend to the arms and in the fingers.

The pain can spur when people try to sit, stand, sneeze, cough or try to tilt their neck backwards. Some also feel weak in their muscles and are unable to grasp objects firmly. Some other symptoms are as follows.

  • Stiff neck
  • Headache at the back of one’s head
  • Numbness or tingling in the shoulder, back or arms and sometimes in the legs

Some uncommon symptoms are loss of balance and decreased bowel or bladder control. These symptoms can be dangerous and require immediate medical attention.

Treatment for Cervical Pain

Treatment for cervical pain can help to decrease the pain and lower the risk of any permanent damage. Most people opt for nonsurgical methods such as the following.
Medicines

Some doctors prescribe medication drugs if over the counter or OTC drugs don’t work. They can prescribe muscle relaxants such as cyclobenzaprine and others to treat muscle spasms. Anti-epileptic drugs such as Neurotin can relax the pain due to nerve damage. Some stronger methods are steroid injections to reduce inflammation and reduce pain. NSAIDs or Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs can also help to reduce the swollen areas.

Physical Therapy

Many doctors recommend physiotherapy in such conditions since this process can help to stretch the neck muscles and the shoulders and help them make stronger. Some specialists use neck traction to relive the pain and the pressure using weights. These weights can increase the space between the cervical joints and give some relief to the cervical discs and the nerve roots.

Surgery

Surgery can help people to get rid of the areas of bone growth and parts of the herniated discs so that the spinal cord gets more space. Though surgery is hardly required for cervical pain, a doctor may recommend it if a patient suffers from severe pain and is unable to move their body freely.

Cervical pain is a common age-related disease that causes discomfort and often causes pain and headaches. Some people find it difficult to sit and do general tasks. A doctor may not be able to heal it entirely but they can recommend conservative treatments that can help you overcome the discomfort and pain.
Acupressure

It is an ancient practice that can help to reduce the tension and pain in the neck area and can increase blood circulation while relaxing the muscles. Soft collars can help to perform this process.

Frequently Asked Questions For Cervical Pain

Bad posture during regular activities such as bending, twisting, etc. can cause the soft gel from the space between two spinal bones to leak and cause pain. It can ultimately lead to cervical pain.

Since cervical pain is often age-related and can be caused due to other situations, the doctor can completely reduce the condition with the help of alternative treatment options such as acupuncture, acupressure, exercise, etc.

The condition can develop and increase for age-related problems and otherwise. If people have neck injuries, and have work-related activities that put excess strain on the neck (Ex. Heavy lifting) or require on to do repetitive neck movements, they have more chances of developing cervical pain.

People can perform some doctor-recommended exercises at home to get some relief. One can take pain reliving medicines too.

A diagnosis can help to eliminate other serious conditions that can cause such pain. Your doctor may ask you to do a physical examination and ask you some typical question related to your muscles and neck. You might need an x-ray to check for excessive bone spurs and other abnormalities.
