What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is the general term for adhesive capsulitis. It is the condition where a person feels pain and stiffness around their shoulder joint. People who suffer from this problem have to face the loss of normal range of motion in the shoulder. The disability to move the area might become worse with time if left untreated.

It is seen that people mainly in their 40s to their 60s are affected and women are more likely to get frozen shoulder than men.  The connective tissues around the shoulder are sensitive. Injury or fracture in the shoulder can decrease the normal capacity to stretch and cause frozen shoulder.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

It is uncertain what causes a frozen shoulder but we know that it is an inflammatory process in the area. In many cases, frozen shoulder occurs since the shoulder region has become immobilized due to past injury, surgery, illness, etc. There are some cases where the reason is unclear.

  • Soft Tissue Damage: The shoulder hinge is surrounded by soft tissues that allow a person to move their shoulders along a wider range of motion. These soft tissues can get injured and cause frozen shoulder.
  • Past Injury: Injury to the shoulder causes the shoulder ball and socket joint to become frozen.
  • Formation of Adhesions or scar tissues: Scar tissues or adhesions may form between the joint and the head of the humerus that causes frozen shoulder.
  • Fracture: Due to overuse, the rotator cuff can get fractured among other things and the inflammation due to the fracture can cause frozen shoulder.

Frequently Asked Questions For Frozen Shoulder

Though the cause of all kinds of frozen shoulder is not known, one can decrease the chances of developing the problem if they start physical therapy shortly after getting a shoulder injury. If you experience shoulder pain and stiffness then it is best to start therapy before the condition worsens.

The symptoms of frozen shoulder can be divided into three stages which are as follows.

  • Freezing stage: It is where the pain slowly increases and it may worsen at night. The shoulder gradually becomes stiffer. It can last for six weeks to nine months.
  • Frozen stage: In this stage the pain can lessen but the shoulders become stiff to the point where it is difficult to complete daily activities. It can last for two to six months.
  • Recovery stage: In this stage the overall condition improves and the full recovery occurs after six months to two years.

Doctors can also ask for your x-ray to make sure that it is not associated with another problem such as arthritis but only an x-ray is not enough to detect the problem.

For the diagnosis the doctor will discuss the symptoms you feel along with your medical history. Next, they will conduct a physical examination of your arms and shoulder and ask you to move it in all directions to check the range of motion.

Pain due to frozen shoulder can increase if left untreated. However, with proper treatment, and a combination of shoulder exercises, one can restore their range of motion and function within a year or less.

But if the condition is left untreated, it takes much more time to get better. The slower process takes about two years or less depending upon their situation.
